What is an IPTV encoder?

Video straight from a camera or an HDMI port is far too large to send over a network. An IPTV encoder does two jobs: it compresses the video with a codec such as H.264 or H.265, and it packages the result for a network protocol such as UDP multicast, SRT or RTMP.

Encoders come as hardware boxes, as software on a computer, or as a cloud service. Hardware is usually the most reliable for 24/7 channels; software is the cheapest way to start; cloud encoding scales without any equipment on site. The right one depends on how many channels you need and where the stream is going.

How to choose an IPTV encoder

Answer these six questions and the shortlist usually picks itself.

  1. Inputs. HDMI suits cameras, PCs and AV sources; SDI suits professional cameras, with longer cables and locking connectors. Most encoders can't capture HDCP-protected HDMI from cable or satellite boxes, and you need the rights to redistribute any channel you encode.
  2. Number of channels. One source needs a single-channel box. A building-wide line-up is cheaper and tidier with a multi-channel encoder such as a 16- or 24-input chassis.
  3. Codec your screens can play. Pick the codec your TVs, set-top boxes or players can decode. H.264 is the safe choice; H.265 needs up to about half the bandwidth, but older boxes may not play it.
  4. Where the stream goes. Multicast UDP for screens inside one building, SRT for reliable feeds over the internet, RTMP for YouTube and similar platforms.
  5. Latency. Live sports, betting and two-way interviews need low delay: look for hardware encoders with SRT. For channels people simply watch, a few seconds of delay doesn't matter.
  6. Management and support. Large systems need a web interface, an API or SNMP monitoring, redundant power and a vendor that ships firmware updates.

H.264 vs H.265 vs AV1

The codec decides how much bandwidth a channel needs and which screens can play it. Newer codecs save bandwidth; older ones play everywhere.

IPTV protocols explained

The protocol decides how the stream travels. Most encoders support several at once.

UDP / RTP multicast
The classic in-building IPTV method: one stream reaches every TV on the local network that tunes in. The network switches need multicast support (IGMP snooping).
SRT
An open-source protocol for sending live video over the public internet. It recovers lost packets, keeps delay low and can encrypt the stream.
RTMP
An older protocol that's still the usual way to push a stream to YouTube, Facebook or Twitch.
HLS
The HTTP format phones, browsers and smart TVs play. It's often made by a server or packager after the encoder, though some encoders output it directly.
NDI / NDI HX
Low-delay video over a production network, used inside studios rather than for delivery to viewers.

There's no single winner; it depends on the job. OBS Studio and FFmpeg are among the most widely used software encoders because they're free. In broadcast, Haivision Makito and Matrox Monarch encoders are common choices, and in-building TV systems often use multi-channel HDMI encoders. H.264 is still the most widely used codec.

H.265 (HEVC) gives the same picture at up to about half the bitrate, which matters for 4K and slower connections. But every screen must be able to decode it. If you have older set-top boxes, H.264 is the safer choice.

An encoder compresses raw video from a source such as HDMI or SDI. A transcoder takes a stream that's already compressed and converts it to another codec, bitrate or format, for example to make several quality levels for adaptive streaming.

Technically yes: a single-channel HDMI encoder can multicast one source to other screens on your network. But most cable and satellite boxes protect their HDMI output with HDCP, which encoders won't capture, and your TV provider's terms may not allow it.
